We are excited to announce that we now offer Shockwave therapy at Avenue Physiotherapy!
What is Shockwave?
Shockwave therapy (formally called Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy) applies high intensity pulses of energy to injured tissue. These energy impulses help to promote growth and tissue repair to injured tendons and connective tissues. When the impulses are applied to the tissues, there is growth of new blood vessels in the damaged tissue. This leads to increased blood flow in the area and stimulates tissue healing. Shockwave has been used clinically for about 15 years, and research shows it is effective for treatment of chronic injuries (where there have been symptoms for more than 6 weeks).
What can it help?
The best evidence for the use of Shockwave indicates that it can help with chronic injuries to tendons and other connective tissues. These include:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Tennis Elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
- Calcific tendonitis in the shoulder
- Achilles tendonitis
- Patellar tendonitis
Is it right for me?
You will be assessed by a Physiotherapist to determine what your injury is, and whether Shockwave is appropriate as part of your treatment. Chronic injuries, such as those mentioned above, can be a result of overuse, sport, or repetitive strain due to a biomechanical issue or muscle imbalance. The Physiotherapist will make sure you understand your condition, and provide other necessary treatment in conjunction with the Shockwave to address the underlying cause of your condition. Shockwave is usually done once a week for 3-5 weeks, depending on your response to the treatment. It can cause discomfort, but the treatment only lasts 3-5 minutes, and the intensity will be adjusted based on how you are feeling.
If you have persistent pain that hasn’t responded to traditional therapy, Shockwave might be right for you. Come in for an assessment by a Physiotherapist at Avenue Physiotherapy, and let us help you achieve your goals.
